Americans Flock to Land of Centenarians

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) July 31, 2012

A small town in the Ecuadorian highlands is seeing an influx of American retirees drawn there by the regions reputation as home to an unusually high number of centenarians.

Vilcabamba, a picturesque town in the Ecuadorian Andes, falls within one of the worlds Green Zonesareas of the planet where people tend to live far longer than average.

Many of the locals claim to be centenariansoften living well into their 100s.

The climate may be one factor behind the anomalyVilcabamba is close to the equator in southern Ecuador and at an elevation of 5,000 feet, temperatures average between 65 and 81 F, every day of the year.

Many of the locals also point to the availability of clean, mineral-rich water, pollution-free air and food that has been cultivated locally without chemical additives.

The expat community here is small, but growing, said Suzan Haskins, InternationalLiving.coms Ecuador editor.

She continued, The healthy lifestyle the locals enjoy here is helping them to live far longer than the average American. Its no wonder our own retirees are drawn here.

The region offers another key benefit attractive to expats: Real estate prices are extremely low.

Not far from the village of Vilcabamba, a two-acre plot of land at the top of a crest with a 360-degree view of the valleys belowwith all utilitiesis selling for $ 49,000.

In the nearby town of Malacatos Taxichi, a four-bedroom/two-bath, rustic wooden home on 1.25 acres of land lists for $ 70,000.

Rent is also cheapbetween $ 300 and $ 1,000 per month, depending on size, amenities, furnishings and other factors.

There are also some small, unfurnished apartments without appliances that rent from $ 80 a month.

Also in the village, walking distance from the plaza via an old Inca trail, a 1,744-square-foot house on 0.4 acres of land is for sale for $ 150,000.
